Statement of Purpose

The purpose of Whitley Bay Baptist Church (WBBC) is to bring people to faith in Christ and through worship and nurture to enable them to glorify God through serving in the church and witnessing to the world.

This purpose will be achieved through the Church’s commitment to three relationships:

1) The Relationship with God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  • WBBC will offer uplifting worship that will be sensitive to the needs of those seeking God;
  • WBBC will offer a programme of Christian nurture and growth that recognises that each of the members of its family is at a different stage on their Christian pilgrimage;
  • WBBC will be faithful to the teaching of Scripture, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit;
  • WBBC affirms the need to undergird the whole of its life with prayer.

2) The Relationship within the Body of Christ.

  • WBBC will encourage all its members to relate to one another in Christian community in such a way that the world will see Christ’s design for human relationships;
  • WBBC will encourage all its members to discover and use the gifts bestowed on them by the Holy Spirit in order to glorify God and edify the Body of Christ;
  • WBBC will encourage all its members to covenant with others to meet regularly in small groups for fellowship, teaching, prayer, witness and pastoral care.
  • WBBC will invite all Members to affirm this statement and enter into a membership Covenant, and all new members will in future be invited to do the same.

3) The Relationship with those Outside the Church

  • WBBC will concentrate on winning the uncommitted in its neighbourhood to Christ, to baptising them, and to incorporating them fully into the mission community;
  • WBBC will be an open and welcoming fellowship;
  • WBBC will commit itself to being a Church of ‘contagious Christians’;
  • WBBC will seek to use its resources and premises to meet the needs of the local community after instigating a process to discover what are those needs;
  • WBBC will support its members as they live out their faith in the world;
  • WBBC will be a prophetic voice within the local community seeking to speak out of its a Christian faith, in a relevant way, on social and moral issues;
  • WBBC will work together with other churches, both Baptist and those of other denominations, in the fulfilment of the Great Commission;
  • WBBC will support the task of world-wide mission through releasing people and resources to communicate the gospel at home and overseas.
